Today’s song is No Words by Tim Hagans. What really gets me about this one is the contrast between the playful, diatonic melody and the more discordant bridge/solos. Also Marc Copland’s comping. The rhythm section is having a conversation the whole time.
Some great moments:
1:20-1:30 Marc Copland fills the space exactly. It’s such a perfect response to the line. Of course Bill Stewart and Scott Lee catch all the hits with him.
1:41-1:43 Scott Lee does a huge slide, accompanied by splash cymbal. “Hey we are at the bridge now”
4:32-4:38 More Marc Copland wizardry.
